Apple iPHONE 4 Eliminates Need for Film Cameras

The announcement of the highly anticipated iPhone 4 dominated the 2010 WWDC Keynote speech. The new iPhone adds several features such as a frontal camera, built in antennas, and a gyroscope, as well as completely overhauling the design. However, there were several other big announcements, such as iOS4 and three major entertainment apps coming to iPhone. The Keynote started with demonstration of an iBooks update for iPad. With the update, features such as sticky notes and the ability to read PDFs will be added. Then the iPhone train started rolling with the announcement of Netflix, FarmVille, and Guitar Hero for iPhone. Netflix for iPhone is a direct port of the popular iPad app only changing the size in regards to the iPhone’s smaller screen. FarmVille was a bit of a shocker, considering that it runs on Flash on Facebook. However, Zynga gave the iPhone its own native app able to do everything that can be done while playing the game on Facebook, even giving the iPhone a bonus exclusive in the snow leopard trinket. Guitar Hero had been expected, considering that rivals Tapulous and Rock Band have had iPhone apps for a long time. Developers Activision may have one-upped them both by adding a realistic strumming mechanic that neither game has. After some positive news regarding the App Store (5 billion downloads) and the iPhone’s smartphone market share (28%, second in the US), Steve Jobs finally gave the public what they had been waiting for months since the Gizmodo story: an official revealing of iPhone 4. Jobs showed eight new features, including the aforementioned frontal camera, antennas, and gyroscope, as well as retina display, an interesting way to pack more pixels into the screen and make it more appealing. But he also demonstrated the iPhone’s new camera system. The camera is now 5 megapixels and has an LED flash. Then the new app that shocked many in attendance was revealed. iMovie for iPhone, accompanying the 4’s new feature of recording 720p HD video at 30 fps. iMovie for iPhone has many of the same features as the Mac version, including adding titles, music, and showing geolocation info for clips. When approved, it will retail on the App Store for $4.99. After the camera surprise, Jobs outdid himself with showcasing iOS4, which will include multitasking, folders, and a unified inbox for Mail. The new features kept on coming with iBooks for iPhone and Apple’s new system of ads, iAd, which already has $60 million committed to it by major brands. Then Jobs sat down and said, “Oh yeah, here’s one more thing” and called Jony Ive, a member of Apple’s design team who had been the first called back when the iPhone was revealed in 2007. Jobs pushed a new button called “FaceTime” and Ive’s face appeared on the screen. Video calls have officially been brought to phones with the new FaceTime feature, which works only over Wifi and is only iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 for the time being. The cost of all this? $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB. The 4 goes on sale June 24th in America and four other countries, and preorders start June 15th.

The Evolution of Vision, the EOS 7D's New Autofocus System
The Canon EOS 7D boasts the most advanced AF system ever seen in an EOS SLR. The completely re-designed system includes a new multi-axis cross-type 19-point AF grid, where the focusing points are evenly spread out across the image plane and clearly displayed through Canon's new Intelligent Viewfinder. All 19 points are f/5.6-sensitive for both horizontal and vertical cross-type focusing, while the center AF point adds high-precision diagonal cross-type sensitivity for f/2.8 and larger aperture lenses. The Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR camera is the first EOS SLR to feature 19 cross-type focusing points that remain fully functional with maximum apertures as small as f/5.6, which brings the performance of the AF system to unprecedented levels for assignments as varied as fast-moving sports action or low-light wedding ceremonies.

The Canon EOS 7D's AF system allows numerous AF area selection modes never seen before in an EOS SLR camera. New modes include:

# Spot AF mode reduces the size of a single AF point to focus on small subjects like an animal in a cage.
# AF Point Expansion mode uses a cluster of AF points adjacent to the selected AF point to automatically assist focusing on moving subjects, such as an athlete on the run.
# Zone AF divides the 19 AF points into five selectable focusing zones and makes it easier to achieve focus with subjects that are difficult to track with Single Point AF or AF point expansion, such as birds in flight.

Additional AF improvements include a revised Automatic AF point selection sequence that allows a user to pick any one of the 19 AF points as a starting point for tracking moving subjects in AI Servo mode. (Previous EOS models required the subject to first be acquired by the center focusing point.) If the subject moves away, the camera will continue to track the movement with the remaining points and display the active focusing point in the viewfinder. Also, a time-saving feature is AF Point Switching, which allows photographers to select and register one AF point for horizontal compositions and a second AF point for vertical shooting, ideal for studio and portrait photographers.

To complement the new AF system, the exposure metering system for the EOS 7D has been completely re-designed to take color information into account, another first for an EOS system. Canon's iFCL metering includes a 63-zone dual-layer metering sensor that reads both illumination and color for consistent results in all lighting conditions, keeping exposure levels stable from shot to shot, even as the light source changes.

Canon's new Intelligent Viewfinder uses a liquid crystal overlay to provide clear and precise displays of focusing points and zones, on-demand grid lines and a spot metering circle. The LCD overlay can also be illuminated in extreme low-light situations or turned off completely. The EOS 7D camera's viewfinder includes a large all-glass pentaprism with an antireflective coating to maximize clarity and provide a brighter display. The EOS 7D's Intelligent Viewfinder features 1.0x magnification with 100 percent coverage for accurate composition and checking of detail.

EOS HD Movie: Empowering the World of Videography
Canon has blazed new trails in HD video capture with the 5D Mark II. Now, the EOS 7D takes DSLR video to new heights with Full HD capture featuring fully manual exposure control, and selectable cinematic frame rates for both NTSC (National Television System Committee) and PAL (Phase Altering Line) standards. Compatible with more than 60 Canon EF and EF-S lenses, the EOS 7D lets videographers take full advantage of the camera's large CMOS sensor to achieve the dramatic frame composition they desire. At the heart of the EOS 7D are two key proprietary Canon technologies, Dual DIGIC 4 Imaging Processors and a large APS-C-sized CMOS sensor, helping to render stunning color reproduction, amazing depth of field and fine detail, even in low-light conditions. The Canon EOS 7D allows for three video recording modes – Full HD and HD in a 16:9 aspect ratio and Standard Definition (SD) in a 4:3 aspect ratio, all at selectable frame rates. The Features You Asked For
A helpful new tool for architectural and landscape photography where angles and perspective are critical is Canon's new built-in Dual Axis Electronic Level, featuring an artificial horizon over the image on the rear LCD screen in Live View or in the viewfinder using illuminated AF points for easy leveling while shooting. Once in your hands, you can immediately feel the ergonomic improvements of the Canon EOS 7D camera, starting with a new super-fluid body design with continuous curves outlining the top of the camera and a revised grip that fits better in a user's hand. Promax Systems Ceases Operations

It is with much sadness I report that Promax Systems has ceased operations. AValive has been a friendly competitor for many years and we have shared the highs and lows of this business together since 1994.

The founder Charles McConathy RIP was instrumental to AValive in the early years giving fatherly advice on how to deal with the issues of running a multi millon dollar company that emerged within a years time span and with out his advice we probably would never have made it to what we are today.

Dan Hatch was the underling who later emerged to take over Promax after Charles death and continued the spirit of helping others who were of like minds, always willing to do what ever it took to get the job done.

I will be in New Orleans this week where ironically was the first of many trade shows Promax and AValive shared booth time together and I will be sure to lay a flower in the Ole Mississippi in their honor.

AValive HQ TO Test All-Digital-TV Service
In Small Market Before National Run

For the residents of Wilmington, N.C., the transition to digital television will come much sooner than expected.

The Federal Communications Commission has chosen Wilmington to be the first U.S. media market to switch to all-digital television broadcasts.

It is a last-minute test for the FCC and broadcasters, which are nervous about what will happen on Feb. 17 when most television signals change to digital from analog, potentially knocking out service to millions of Americans.

The FCC is expected to announce details Thursday. Wilmington will switch to digital on Sept. 8. News that Wilmington would be the test market was reported Wednesday morning by trade magazine TelevisionWeek.

"We certainly think the transition is important and we appreciate Wilmington's willingness to do it early," said FCC Chairman Kevin Martin in an interview. The FCC contacted seven media markets where broadcasters could potentially switch early, he said, but Wilmington was the only area to volunteer.

Wilmington is the nation's 135th-largest television market, with about 180,000 households, and the smallest in North Carolina, according to Nielsen Media Research. About 93% of the households there subscribe to cable or satellite services, slightly more than the national average.

The FCC has been looking for volunteers in smaller media markets to switch early, but most broadcasters have balked, concerned about losing advertising dollars and upsetting residents who would rather not be used as guinea pigs.

Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said the test represents "a huge opportunity for the Wilmington TV market to pave the way for the entire country."

The FCC estimates about 15.5 million U.S. households rely on free broadcast television. To reduce grumbling about the switch, the government set up a $40-coupon program to help consumers pay for set-top converter boxes. This week, the government announced that more than a million coupons have been redeemed.

Apple hunts Windows users with Safari 3.1

Apple has released the latest version of its Safari web browser.

A full release version of Safari, which has until now only been available for Mac, is now also shipping a Windows-friendly version.

This reflects the fact that Microsoft's operating system runs on Intel Macs.

A beta version of Safari 3 for Windows was released in June last year, quickly followed by a bug-fix from Apple.

Despite a shaky start - which included online reports of slow page loading compared to Internet Explorer 7 on Windows machines - a million people downloaded the beta in just 48 hours.

Safari is currently the number three browser in the marketplace, with analytics company Net Applications data showing six per cent of the world's web users use the browser. Internet Explorer accounts for three quarters of the market, followed by Mozilla's Firefox on about 17 per cent.

Apple claims that Safari 3.1 is the fastest web browser in the world - 1.9 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox 2.

It based these claims on tests made with VeriTest iBench 5.0 using default settings running on an iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system running Windows XP with 1GB of RAM.

Apple also says that Safari is capable of running JavaScript up to six times faster than other browsers and is better tooled to deliver Web 2.0 content.

"Safari 3.1 for Mac and Windows is blazingly fast, easy to use and features an elegant user interface," said Apple spokesman Philip Schiller, "and best of all, Safari supports the latest audio, video and animation standards for an industry-leading Web 2.0 experience."

He is referring to support for the new video and audio HTML tags, CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) animations, and CSS web fonts.

To work, Safari 3.1 for Windows needs XP or Vista, at least 256MB of RAM and a minimum 500MHz Intel Pentium processor.

On Mac, it will run on any G3, G4 G5 or Intel machine with FireWire, running updated OS X Tiger (10.4.11) and carrying at least 256MB of RAM.

Apple unveils Xsan 2

In the first major upgrade to its Storage Area Network (SAN) file system, Apple on Tuesday introduced Xsan 2, adding a new feature called MultiSAN and making it easier for first time users to get up and running.

“The feedback we’ve heard from customers is that a SAN is too difficult to setup, so one of the goals in this release was to make SAN simpler,” Eric Zelenka, senior product line manager server & storage software, told Macworld.

One of the ways Apple has accomplished this is with the SAN Setup Assistant, which is integrated into Mac OS X Leopard Server or as an application that can be run on its own. When first setting up Mac OS X Server, a fourth option automatically appears if you have a Fibre Channel card installed. The setup assistant will do all the heavy lifting for you, setting up everything including Open Directory permissions.

Xsan 2 also includes a new feature called MultiSAN for users who need to access multiple Xsan volumes from the same workstation or server. Zelenka pointed to examples like a newsroom with separate SAN volumes for production and broadcast.

“Tens of thousands of businesses, from small video post-production houses to large data centers and TV stations, use Xsan as their clustered SAN file system,” said Zelenka. “Now with Xsan 2, businesses can efficiently share and access their data faster and easier than ever before.”

In addition, Apple said that Leopard Server features such as iCal Server, Mail Server and Podcast Producer, can now integrate with Xsan 2 to support clustered file systems, improving performance and scalability and reducing the impact of a service outage from the loss of any one server.

Xsan 2 has also been qualified with third-party RAID storage hardware from Promise Technology in configurations tuned and optimized for Xsan.

Apple has qualified Xsan 2 with Xserve, Mac Pro and Apple Fibre Channel PCI-X cards. Xsan 2 requires that Mac OS X version 10.5 or Mac OS X Server version 10.5 software be installed and will support qualified Fibre Channel switches from vendors such as Brocade, QLogic and Cisco, and RAID storage hardware including Xserve RAID and Promise VTrak E-Class RAID subsystems.

Apple discontinues Xserve RAID

pple on Tuesday quietly discontinued its Xserve RAID enterprise storage product line. It disappeared from the online Apple Store shortly after the company introduced Xsan 2 this morning.

However, Apple struck a deal with Promise Technology to have its RAID systems qualified for use with Xsan 2, so users are not left out in the cold. Apple said the Promise product delivers on the features its customers have been asking for and it also delivers significantly greater performance.

“We decided to focus our efforts where we could add most value, with Xserve, Xsan and Leopard Server,” Apple spokesman Anuj Nayar, told Macworld.

Customers that already own an Xserve RAID will still be able to add Apple storage too. While the RAID system itself has been discontinued, the company will still sell modules for it.

“Xserve RAID is still available while supplies last and we will continue to sell the 500 and 750GB drive modules,” said Nayar. “For new RAID purchases we recommend the Promise VTrack E-Class subsystem.”

Each VTrak RAID 3U subsystem supports up to 16 integrated 3.5-inch SATA or SAS drives and an expansion chassis that can deliver another 16 SATA or SAS drives, for capacities up to 24TB per configuration. The system also comes with dual redundant active-active, failover/failback RAID controllers, 4Gb Fibre Channel connections to the host, RAID 5 and RAID 6 support, with global and dedicated hot spare hard drives.

According to Promise the VTrak E-Class RAID subsystem delivers outstanding performance for general server and video storage workloads, reaching up to 1400MB/s of sequential read performance and 617MB/s of sequential write performance in a RAID 5 configuration with redundant controllers. When configured with Apple’s Xsan 2 clustered file system and Final Cut Studio 2 video suite, the 32-drive Vtrak subsystem delivers up to 6 streams of 8-bit uncompressed high definition video, 22 streams of ProRes HQ compressed HD video and 26 streams of 8-bit uncompressed SD video.

Even with its exit from the enterprise storage market, Apple says it is committed to the overall market.

Many products you see at Macworld Expo look so much like other ones you’ve seen before, it’s tempting to pass them by. But doing so means you sometimes miss out on some very interesting stuff.

Apple outraged many of its fans last year when Chief Executive Steve Jobs dropped the price of the 8 gigabyte model of the phone by $200 just two months after putting the phone on sale in June. They were angered again last month when the company upgraded the software for the iPod Touch--and then demanded $20 for the upgrade from anyone who had already purchased the widescreen video player.

But if anyone complains when Apple introduces faster, better iPhones later this year, they'll have only themselves to blame. So, here's a bit of advice: if you haven't bought an iPhone yet, do yourself a favor and wait a little longer.

The signs are all there. While Apple's secretiveness is legendary, it can't keep its partners from discussing their own plans. In a move that must have rankled Jobs, AT&T Chief Executive Randall Stephenson let it slip in November that AT&T and Apple would offer a version of the iPhone this year that works with AT&T's third-generation wireless network.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

That will be a big improvement. The EDGE network used by today's iPhones allows users to download data at average speeds of between 75 and 150 kilobits per second, according to AT&T. By contrast, those on AT&T's new HSDPA network can get data at more than a million bits per second--roughly 10 times as fast as today's EDGE networks.

While a high-speed wireless connection is a nice plus for users of typical mobile phones, it promises to do wonders for widescreen iPhones, which combine the ability to play movies and surf the Web with features found on more traditional mobile phones, like the ability to send text messages.

To be sure, a 3G iPhone likely won't pop up over the next several weeks. The Unofficial Apple Weblog reported this week that Apple is hiring a television production firm in preparation for a high-profile late February announcement. That event, however, will likely detail the widely anticipated release of a software developer's kit for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch.

But the wait can't drag on much longer. AT&T is building out its high-speed wireless network as quickly as it can, announcing Wednesday that it will expand its 3G wireless broadband service to more than 80 additional cities by the end of the year for a total of roughly 350 markets (See: "AT&T's Stealthy Plans"). Meanwhile, iPhone chip supplier Broadcom last year began cranking out samples of a power-sipping, 3G-friendly chip, the BCM21551, that could give the iPhone access to AT&T's new network without sucking the gadget's battery dry too quickly.

Finally, there are even a few smoke signals coming from Apple itself. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company quietly upgraded the storage on its highest-end iPhone to 16 GB for an extra $100 this week. That extra memory would give the phone the ability to handle fatter video downloads. And even Steve Jobs has shown his frustration with the slow pace at which some Web sites show up on the iPhone, muttering about the slow loading time of the nytimes.com during his last keynote.

And, as anyone who has ever worked at Apple can tell you, when Jobs gets frustrated, things get changed.

Apple releases new Mac Pro with 8 Processor Cores

Just one week before the start of Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco, Apple has released an update for its high-end Mac Pro desktop.

The new Mac Pro combines two of Intel’s new 45 nanometer Quad-Core Xeon 5400 processors running up to 3.2 GHz, new graphics and up to 4TB of internal storage. Prices start at $2,799.

“This is a real dream machine for our power users,” David Moody, Apple’s vice president of worldwide Mac product marketing, told Macworld. “We are seeing two times the performance of our previous product.”

The Mac Pro features 12MB of L2 cache per processor, dual-independent 1600 MHz front side buses and up to 32GB of 800 MHz DDR2 ECC FB-DIMM memory. According to Apple, the new Mac Pro achieves a 61 percent increase in memory throughput.

The Mac Pro comes standard with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics card with 256MB of video memory. The systems also include a new PCI Express 2.0 graphics slot that delivers up to double the bandwidth compared to the previous generation, the company said.

With the new PCI Express, the Mac Pro supports the latest generation of graphics cards from NVIDIA, such as the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of video memory, or the NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 with 1.5GB of video memory and a 3D stereo port for stereo-in-a-window applications.

With support for up to four graphics cards, the new Mac Pro can drive up to eight 30-inch displays at once for advanced visualization and large display walls.

For storage, the Mac Pro has four internal drive bays allowing up to 4TB. The systems also have five USB 2.0, two FireWire 400, two FireWire 800, optical and analog audio in and out, dual Gigabit Ethernet ports and a headphone jack.

Hispanic Employees Paid Less Than Non-Hispanics, Denied Promotion and Health Benefits, Federal Agency Says

NEW YORK – The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) today filed a complaint and entered into a consent decree in federal district court with B & H Foto and Electronics Corp., resolving a national origin discrimination case on behalf of Hispanic workers at one of the largest retail sellers of photographic, computer and electronic equipment in the metropolitan area.

The EEOC’s lawsuit, filed under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 alleged that B & H paid Hispanics in its warehouses less than non-Hispanic workers and failed to promote them or provide them health benefits based on their national origin (EEOC v. B & H Foto and Electronics Corp., No. 07- CV-9241). The court filed complaint is resolved simultaneously through the voluntary settlement of this matter by consent decree under which B & H agrees to comply with the requirements of Title VII; equalize the wages of Hispanic employees to their non-Hispanic coworkers; and to work with the EEOC in a claims process to distribute $4.3 million in monetary relief to individuals who were paid less, not promoted, or denied benefits because they are Hispanic.

“We commend B & H for working cooperatively with us to resolve this matter without protracted litigation,” said EEOC New York Trial Attorney Louis Graziano. “We encourage other employers to follow B & H’s example of resolving this case expeditiously and in good faith.”

The lawsuit and consent decree are filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. The decree, in addition to proving for distribution of the multi-million dollar settlement fund, also requires employer training, notice posting, adoption of an anti-discrimination policy, reporting to the EEOC, and monitoring by the EEOC for the following five years.

EEOC New York District Director Spencer H. Lewis, said: “Employees are entitled to work in an environment free of pay disparity and discrimination due to a person’s national origin. Every individual deserves the freedom to compete in the workplace on a fair and level playing field.”

Panasonic AG-HSC1U Review

At last April's NAB, Panasonic introduced what it calls “the world's smallest professional 3CCD high-definition camcorder,” the 1.1lb. AG-HSC1U. This miniature HD camcorder, about the size of a lens handgrip on a full-sized 2/3in. camcorder, is about as small as a camcorder can get, hardly wider than its lens diameter or longer than its 16:9 flip-out display.

But that's only half of what captured my attention at first. Three other outstanding features leapt out too: remarkable industrial design, an inviting user interface, and flash-based tapelessness. Not just any tapelessness, mind you, but long-GOP MPEG-4 — this being Panasonic, after all, champion of intraframe DVCPRO HD and AVC-Intra — captured to a single-slotted SD card, the postage-stamp-sized memory popular in digital still cameras and cell phones.

As if James Bond miniaturization and no moving parts weren't enough, there's more: uncompressed HDMI output as an alternative to USB video file transfer. A battery-powered SD card reader with a 40GB hard drive that stores the contents of 10 4GB SD cards in the field. A list price of $2,099, which implies online street prices of less than $2,000.

All this sounds too good to be true, but for once, it isn't. While there are significant caveats, which I'll describe below, the bottom line is that this cute, friendly HD camcorder is a great second camera.

Years ago when many of us shot more 16mm than we do now, it was common to augment your Arriflex 16 SR or Aaton kit with a wind-up Bolex. Many indelible, off-the-cuff documentary moments — seen from the window of a traveling automobile, for instance — which would otherwise have been lost because the main camera was packed away, were instead “grabbed” because a compact Bolex was at hand. Bolex cutaways always blended seamlessly.

The HSC1U nicely steps into this role. It's not a main camera or an ‘A’ camera, and it wouldn't pretend to be. There's no viewfinder. No headphone jack despite an external mic mini jack, and limited audio control. The beauty of the HSC1U lies elsewhere: Tape it to a hockey stick for a puck's point-of-view. Place it inside a jar being opened; slide it down a drainpipe; bolt it to a skateboarder's helmet; set it on the ground for a rat's-eye perspective 1.5in. high. When you're done, slip it in the pocket of your Schott motorcycle jacket, as I did.

The HSC1U's sleek, symmetrical design is so minimalist, so 21st-century, I'd nominate it for The Museum of Modern Art's design collection. The recording start/stop button and mode selection dial at the rear are coaxial with the barrel of the body and the lens, suggesting a bullet shape. An artful concept, it pleases the eye and feels solid to the hand. The 12X Leica Dicomar zoom, masked for 16:9 and recessed (no lens hood needed), incorporates a protective outer shutter that automatically opens and closes when the HSC1U is turned on and off. With only nine switches and buttons — LCD brightness, auto/manual, mode selection dial, zoom, still photo, recording start/stop, menu on/off, menu joystick, and trash button — it relies on its bright, sharp 16:9, 251,000-pixel flip-out LCD for both viewing and control.

With most camcorders, accessing the controls by LCD is a prescription for high blood pressure, but the HSC1U's superior design extends to its graphic user interface. That's right, a GUI, just like any other up-to-date computer — only the HSC1U uses a five-position mini joystick (up, down, right, left, center) instead of a mouse to navigate. And what a pleasure to use: The LCD controls are fast, animated, and colorful. Manual adjustment of iris, focus, shutter, white balance, and mic input levels are remarkably simple using the joystick, and there's even an information mode (marked by a small “I” in a circle) that explains how some of the functions operate.

Apple Announces New iPod Touch

NEW YORK Apple Inc.'s iPod Touch, which uses the iPhone's touchscreen capability, was the centerpiece of the company's revamped iPod lineup unveiled on Wednesday.

The iPod risked falling under the shadow of the iPhone - Apple's combination cell phone/iPod that has captured the industry buzz for most of the year. When the iPhone was released, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said the much ballyhooed device was "the best iPod ever." As such, investors were looking for an iPod with comparable capabilities.

Jobs answered it with the iPod Touch, which shares the same touchscreen technology that was the trademark of the iPhone. The device also features the ability to connect to Wi-Fi Internet hotspots and a full Internet browser.

The device will sell for $299 for the 8-gigabit version, and $399 for a 16- gigabit version.

To complement the new device, Apple unveiled an iTunes Wi-Fi music store. Customers can preview and purchase the song over the Web using a Wi-Fi connection to their iPod Touch.

Jobs also unveiled a new version of the Nano, which Jobs said was the most popular music player in history. The new Nano is wider to accommodate a 2-inch video screen and metal design. A four-gigabit Nano is $149, while the eight- gigabit version is $199.

The video iPod has been renamed iPod Classic and will come with double the memory. The low-end Shuffle product, meanwhile, will come with additional colors.

The latest batch of iPods met the usual fanfare and buzz surrounding an Apple product, and to the expected "oohs" and "ahhs" from the Apple faithful.

Apple also unveiled tweaks to its popular iTunes digital music store. Customers pay 99 cents for a song from iTunes, and will be able to create a custom 30-second ringtone clip for their iPhone for an additional 99 cents. The feature will launch next week.

Apple's iTunes features 6 million songs. The service is the nation's No. 3 music retailer behind Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) and Best Buy Co. (BBY).

The iPod update is the first in about two years and comes about two months after Apple introduced a newer lineup of iMacs, the desktop computers that occupy another important part of Apple's product lineup.

Apple and AValive Announce New IMACS

August 07, 2007 (AValive) -- Apple today announced its IMac desktop line, dropping the 17 inch model with the smallest screen, cutting the price of the top-end system, and changing the design for a thinner, trimmer look.

In an event held at Apple's Cupertino, CA., headquarters, CEO Steve Jobs introduced three new iMacs -- two with 20-in. LCD screens, the third boasting a 24-in. monitor -- priced between $1,199 and $1,799. All are available immediately in Apple's retail stores and at the company's Web site.

The new entry-level iMac, now priced $200 above the previous least expensive model and includes a 20-in. screen, a 2.0-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of memory and a 250GB hard drive. The $1,499 middle model, which also has a 20-in. screen, features a 320GB drive, a 2.4-GHz processor and a faster ATI graphics card. At the top of the lineup, the 24-in. iMac, which sells for $200 less than the previous top-end model, contains the same innards as the $1,499 model but features a larger screen.

Apple today launched a revamped line of iMacs.

The 20-in. screens offer 1680- by 1050-pixel resolutions; the 24-in. screen has a resolution of 1920 by 1200 pixels.

All three sport FireWire 400/800 connections and a CD/DVD optical drive, they also support Bluetooth and 802.11n wireless. A new keyboard -- which was the focus of rampant Internet speculation over the last week -- is more MacBook-like and comes in an optional wireless version.

Apple Mac PRO Now Supports Panasonic AVCHD Format

After months of waiting, users of those tiny new AVCHD high-definition camcorders from Sony and Panasonic now have a reliable and robust post-production option for Apple’s Mac platform.

Apple has released an update to Final Cut Pro (version 6.0.1) that transcodes AVCHD video for use in FCP. The company’s new version ingests AVCHD in Final Cut’s Log and Transfer window as either Apple ProRes 422 or Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC).

There are, however, some tradeoffs. Although AVCHD camcorders may be tiny, the files created after transcoding are not. Because AVCHD has a much higher compression ratio than its ProRes 422 codec, the ingested files are significantly larger than the original files.

How much bigger? How about ten times! Apple said a two-minute native AVCHD file takes up about 200 MB of space. After transcoding to the Apple ProRes 422 codec, the file size can be as large as 2 GB. Since FCP does not estimate the size of a transcoded AVCHD file before ingesting, it is entirely possible to exceed the available space on your capture disk during transfer.

Another new option for Mac users is Voltaic, a $30 standalone application that converts AVCHD clips to a QuickTime-formatted movie using AIC. Converted files can be edited in both Final Cut or iMovie HD. Output files are four times the size of the ingested file.

One caveat is that Voltaic, in version 1.0, can only handle file sizes up to 500 MB, which means clips are limited to five minutes in duration at the highest quality.
